Let’s start with a fact. LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran is a bloodthirsty terrorist who created enough havoc for this country as well as the region, and should be eliminated!!!
With that said, I find it pretty surprising and disgusting to see how the so called ‘world icons’ are partnering with the LTTE to protect it when it is at the verge of being erased from the face of our country. The most recent stunt was pulled off by the UK Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. David Miliband, where he held hands with his French partner Bernard Kouchner and came to persuade the GOSL to go for a ceasefire due to the ‘humble’ and ‘pure’ intention of making safe passage to the innocent civilians trapped in the war torn area. Now, this seems rather paradoxical since all these guys are asking the government to stop eliminating the terrorists while the terrorist leader is using a human shield to protect his ... you know what.
The govt is doing a tremendous operation out there rescuing over 200,000 people and when ‘Milli’band walks in and tries to be the ‘Angel of Salvation’ that looks an absolute joke. This doesn’t end there. Even the UN Secreatary General is not doing his job right. From the beginning he has tried to point the finger at the govt, and even now when there are enough other burning issues in the world where his attention is needed, he comes and says to find the murderers of Mr.Lasantha Wickramathunga which is an indirect pressure put on the govermnment. Take the The US-led ‘Tokyo Co-Chairs’. What a nerve they had in asking to provide amnesty to the LTTE!!! Why can’t they provide amnesty to Bin Laden?! When Prabhakaran killed so many innocent civilians, no foreign minister came or put pressure on the LTTE. Where were Mr Miliband, Mr. Moon or the Tokyo Co-Chairs? Were they hibernating? They are just wasting time to fulfill their own electoral political dreams.
Although they have smartly registered the phrase ‘ethnic conflict’ for the problem in SL, it is really not an ethnic conflict any more. Now it is an eradication of a deadly terrorist group. I myself know that multi cultural and multi racial people can peacefully co-exist since I’ve been in such a school, a University and even my current workplace provides a peaceful environment to all employees where your capabilities become the only factors that signify you from another. So, it is just a matter of breaking out of the shells that we are trapped in, and embracing the fact that the significance is in what you say and do and not in the social division or group that you belong to.
The President, Secretary of Defence and the Army Commander of the country are being commendably strong amidst the ruthless forces which are trying to benefit out of the long lasting conflict of this country. We have been also unfortunate to have hundreds of leg pullers in the country itself including some top ranking players in the so called opposition party.
However, as a final note I have to say, this is the last chance we have to bring a definite end to this burning issue, and if the leadership of the country backs off now, there’s not going to be another chance. My plea for all the factions who have been devouring out of the ‘ethnic issue’ is, please stop being vultures. You’ve had enough of your share. Please let this country prosper and reach its true heights at least now.

You may be right saying //it is really not an "ethnic conflict" any more//, but in reality, being a Tamil who can understand Sinhalese language, I can hear and get what many Sinhalese people think and speak, while traveling, in the town, and in various places.
It not so promising to me what I hear. May be this could bring an end to the war and terrorism in this country which all of us want. But I really don't think it’s going to solve the problem.
Now what we are doing is treating the symptoms, and not the cause. Especially I could sense a mentality many Sinhalese in the South these days, who "truly" believe that Tamils should "leave" the south/Colombo and go to north when the war ends, as “we” do not “belong” here. Unless this mentality changes, and the one-sided "history" subjects tough in schools changes, I really do not expect a “real change” in this nation.
Also in the current context I will not be happy to have my children learn this history, unless it changes in time...!!!

Yes it's true Nimal. Government is treating the symptoms not the cause. But in the current context without treating these symptoms reaching the cause is not realistic in my point of view.I understand what you say about history. It's again true,you need your respect to live in a society where multi-ethnic groups are living and tamils deserve that.
But I'm not agreeing on the the sense you've received that Sinhala majority in the south will say after the war, that Tamils don't belong in the south. That was the mentality of LTTE that, Sinhala people don't belong in the north. I know that, the generation of our parents had that type of mentality. But not our generation. I'm not saying that there are no extremists in our generation. Its same for both Sinhalese and Tamils.
We all are sons and daughters of mother Lanka. And our nationality is Sri Lankan not Sinhalese or Tamils. We respect you and your culture. That's the mentality change of our generation. We all
should be accepted at anywhere in Sri Lanka Tamils in the South and Sinhalese in the North. So much needed mentality change is happening.
It's true that Tamils have there problems and Sinhalese governments in the past has responded wrong to those problems. But to cure this wound, another chance has to be given and I sincerely hope that Tamil community will have faith at least for a one last time.
Well these 'big' ass countries cannot keep their hands off us. Can they? Clearly they don't want this conflict to end because they need us to always have problems and suffer so we become an easy target for them. In a computer science sense this is what we call 'divide and conquer'. First create conflicts/divisions in a country, nurture the problems (in our case terrorism) and then when the time is right go aquire the country and strip down it for all the resources it has to offer. Guess we are destined to tolerate this crap for the rest of our lives :(

Anyway, the focus of this post was to really express how pissed off I am at these external idiots who are trying to complicate stuff when things are clear in black and white.
And as for your comments on the 'conflict', well how about thinking of it this way. I know there have been problems in the past. But, now things are a lot more different when compared to the past. The people whom you hear who think that you guys should go back to the north are the people who created problems in the past. But, their generation will be over in few days. It is our generation that is going to take over the country. So, we can make a difference rather than clinging on to the traditional stereotypical beliefs we have. The ride will be rough. But, it is possible. And it is us who can play a big role in it now. remember... we all are 23+ now ;)
Again I'd say I am living proof for the possible harmonious co-existance. I was born and bred with tea estates all around me and most of the guys who looked after me and interacted with me were Tamils. I could speak Tamil and Sinhalese alike when I was 4-5 years. All of those people were like family to me. The in school, the Sinhala : Tamil ratio was 2:1. We helped them out in the Kalai Viza and they came to help us in the Vesak and Poson celbrations. And, interestingly the school had a Christian background :) Even to date, when there is anything important in my life, i visit the temple to get blessed, and the sister from the church above our house who is a Tamil come down to pray for me. So, guys it is all possible. As I said, it is just about "breaking out of the shell."

but as Paduka said we have to solve the problem of LTTE first.I am sure as Ara said that we who will be the ppl playing the big role.So its up to us when we change our attitude.Others will follow, and most of our batch mates have the same mind set as Ara.At this very moment with the things happening around the world like Canada might have made some ppl talk like that. But i am sure that they will realize once the war is over and things start to move smooth.
